Basic Boat Safety

One thing Florida is known for is having fun on the water. Sailboats, speedboats, jet skis, and other watercraft are a very popular pastime in our state. While boating can be a great way for friends and family to spend a day together, they can also be very dangerous. This is especially true when they are used by people who do not know all of the safety basics.

If you plan on spending some time at the beach, please keep the following safety tips in mind. It is not only better for you, but for everyone else at the beach.

  • Always make sure someone on land knows where you are and when you should be back. If an accident occurs on the water, you want people to notice your absence and call for help.
  • A leading cause of boating accidents is passengers falling overboard. Make sure you have steady footing and something to hold on to at all times.
  • Do not mix boating and heavy drinking. Intoxicated boaters are more likely to be involved in accidents and to suffer fatal injuries.
  • Sign up for a course. Even if you have a friend or relative who is willing to teach you about sailing, it is always best to get information from a licensed professional.

Equipment to Have on Board

Never go sailing without the following safety equipment:

  • Personal floatation devices for every passenger
  • A fire extinguisher if your boat has a built-in fuel tank
  • Distress flares and a warning bell or horn
