Date Rape
Each year, there are 132,000 reports made by women that they have been victims of rape or attempted rape. It is estimated that only one-half to one-sixth of all rape cases are reported, which means that there could be up to 1.2 million women raped by their current or former male partners on a yearly basis.
What makes the situation even worse is that 68% of all women raped knew their rapist as a boyfriend, friend, or casual acquaintance. This, technically, makes the majority of rape cases date rape. Date rape is defined as any non-consensual sexual activity between two people who already know each other platonically or sexually. It is also sexual assault taking place during a social interaction between the rapist and the victim.
While date rape does not require drugs, it is frequently facilitated by their use. The drugs are designed to neutralize the victim's ability to resist. In addition, they frequently render the victim unconscious while impairing the victim's memory of the event.
There are three drugs which are commonly used as date rape enablers. They are GHB, Rohyphol, and Ketamine. GHB and Rohyphol are both illegal in the United States and so are smuggled in from elsewhere. Ketamine is a legal animal anesthetic used by veterinarians. As a result, when a vet's office is broken into, chances are good that Ketamine is what the thieves were after.
