Lightning Hazard
More lightning strikes and flashes are experienced in Florida than in any other state. In fact, only central Africa experiences more lightning in the entire world. Florida is a peninsula, causing much more convection which contributes to numerous thunderstorms.
These thunderstorms, even though they are an almost daily occurrence, should not be ignored. They are just as capable of inflicting harm on people as any other lightning. As a hazard, lightning is a problem for both golf courses and golfers. It has been estimated that half of all fatalities due to lightning occur on the golf course.
As a result of this estimate, the National Golf Foundation conducted a survey to determine awareness of lightning's risks among both clubs and golfers. In the survey, half of the member golf clubs surveyed reported that they do maintain lightning warning systems. Of the same surveyed clubs, one-third of them reported that they have created a golf course evacuation plan in the event that there is lightning.
Most of the time, injuries from lightning are treated as an act of God. This means that no one was at fault for someone's injury. While this is true, it is not accurate to say that all injuries from lightning are completely acts of Gods. There can be other factors involved in determining fault. Some common factors include:
- The victim's failure to appreciate the danger of lightning
- The victim's failure to take proper cover
- The unavailability of proper cover
