What Should You Do After A Car Accident?

15 Passenger Van Hazards

15-passenger vans have been in use as a means of transporting medium sized groups for a number of years. They are employed by church groups, daycare centers, senior and eldercare centers, private schools, universities, and are even used as airport shuttles. Despite their wide use, they are hazardous vehicles.

15-passenger vans were born from cargo vans. The main design and look of a 15-passenger van comes from cargo vans of the sort used by plumbing groups, painters, etc. Automakers, when faced with the demand for a vehicle that can carry a large number of people, opted to lengthen their cargo vans, make them higher, add a couple of windows, and add a bunch of seats to answer the demands.

While the alterations made to the basic cargo van did answer the demands of the public, the basic re-design failed to take into account the safety of the people riding in the van. The alterations made to the cargo vans raised the center of gravity of the van. The addition of seats makes it possible for the van’s center of gravity to be lifted even higher.

The threshold for increased chances of rollover is not that high. When there are 5 or more passengers in the vehicle, the likelihood of a rollover accident increases dramatically. This means that when the van is only a third full, it begins to get extremely dangerous.

Another problem with these vans is the extension of the rear of the van beyond the rear wheels. Because the overall length of the van was lengthened when the cargo van was made into a passenger van, but the length of the chassis wasn’t, there are four to five and a half feet of van beyond the rear wheels. This causes problems when there are numerous people sitting in the rear seats as well as luggage. The weight at the back of the van makes the van more difficult to control, increasing the odds that control will be lost and injuries will occur.
