What Should You Do After A Car Accident?

Bat Dangers

Bat bites, though rare, are real risks that pose the threat of rabies to their victims. Because bats are considered to be wild animals, they have a higher chance of carrying disease or infection in their saliva. These injuries fall into the category of dangerous animal bites that should be assessed and treated immediately by a medical professional.

Rabies

Rabies is a very dangerous virus that animals – both wild and domesticated – can carry in their saliva, if they are infected. This illness may only be transferred to humans through an open break or wound in the skin, such as one caused by a deep and penetrating bite. Bat bites in particular pose a serious threat because their fangs are very small and marks indicating bites may not be noticed by the victim. Those who have had any sort of physical contact with a bat are recommended to go through a rabies treatment program (unless, of course, the bat is captured and tests negative for rabies).

Symptoms of Rabies

Rabies is a virus that attacks the central nervous system. Symptoms typically arise anywhere from two to twelve weeks after the initial infection, and victims almost inevitably will pass away several days after showing the first symptoms. Signs of a rabies infection include the following:

  • Paralysis
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Paranoia
  • Hallucinations
  • Delirium
  • Brain damage

While most domestic animals are vaccinated for rabies, wild animals such as bats are not, and they run a greater risk of carrying this virus.
