Burn Injuries: In the Bathroom
There are many items in an average person’s bathroom that can lead to serious burn injuries if they are handled improperly or without care. The shower / bath tub itself it a common source of burn injuries due to high water temperature.
In order to protect yourself and your family from damaging burn injuries, here are some easy bathroom safety tips that everyone can follow.
- When using appliances that heat up (such as curling irons or straightening irons), make sure that they are turned off and unplugged before you leave the bathroom. Not only will this help reduce the likelihood of someone touching a hot item and burning themselves, but it will also reduce the chances of a fire.
- Turn down your water heater. If you lower your water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, not only will you prevent scalding burns in the shower and tub, but you will also save energy and money on electric bills.
- If you have children, make sure that any appliances that can heat up (e.g. curling irons) are placed as far back on the counter as possible so that they cannot be reached.
- Test bath water before placing your child in the tub to make sure it is not too hot. Always err on the side of caution.
- Do not place your child in the tub and THEN fill it with water. You should fill the tub first, and then place your child in once you feel that it has reached a safe temperature.
