Bus Safety for Children
About 25 million children around the US ride buses to school and back. If your child is among them, you will naturally want to make sure he or she is fully informed about safe bus behavior. School bus accidents are not common, but when they do occur, they can be tragic. At the law offices of Jacksonville bus accident attorney Don Guthrie, PA, we recommend reviewing the following tips with your child.
While on the bus, or near buses, children should always be sure to:
- Remain seated. Running in the aisle, leaning over seats, or putting hands or faces outside the window can be very dangerous.
- Talk quietly to children near them. Loud noises can distract the bus driver or prevent him or her from hearing important sounds. When approaching a railroad crossing or busy intersection, quiet behavior is especially important.
- Never cross in front of, or behind, a bus. Bus drivers have a difficult time seeing children who are in those “danger zones.” They should only cross near a bus with the assistance of a crossing guard or other trustworthy adult.
- Be careful with loose clothing or dangling cords, necklaces, etc. They can get caught and cause a child to trip, especially while getting on or off the bus.
- Be very careful around buses that are waiting to pick kids up or drop them off. They should not walk through these areas with adult supervision. They need to know the importance of walking slowly and looking both ways the whole time.
