What Should You Do After A Car Accident?

Drugs and Liver Damage

There are thousands of prescription and over the counter drugs on the market today. These drugs are derived from many sources, both natural and artificial. Many of them have provided much-needed relief for countless people with a variety of conditions. Unfortunately, every so often a drug is placed on the market that does more harm than good.

Side effects resulting in liver damage are the leading reason for drugs to be pulled off the market. There are even many legal drugs that can cause serious liver problem in certain circumstances. If you have been injured because a pharmaceutical company failed to release important information about a drug’s risks, you could have grounds for a Jacksonville defective product lawsuit.

Devastating Forms of Liver Damage

There are many different kinds of liver damage that can be linked to drugs. All of them can have grave consequences for your health. Some of the more common forms of chemically caused liver damage are:

  • Liver necrosis: The death of liver cells. This can cause acute liver failure, hepatitis, and other life-threatening conditions.
  • Cholestasis: An inflammation of the liver, which can interfere with its functioning and eventually lead to jaundice, a severe medical condition.
  • Granulomas: These are clusters of cells from the immune system trying to fight off an unrecognized substance. When caused by a drug reaction, they are often found throughout the body, usually including the liver.

All of these conditions can cause chronic health problems or even death in the patients unfortunate enough to develop them. Some of the drugs most widely associated with liver damage include Acetaminophen, NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, the most common non-prescription painkillers), and certain kinds of steroids.

Before you take any new kind of drug, including herbal therapies, be sure to talk to a doctor about your risk factors for liver disease.
