Evaluating a Playground’s Safety
Taking your child to play in a local park or at a playground can be a great way to bond with your child while enjoying some outdoor exercise and fresh air. However, before you take your child to any facility that you are unfamiliar with, you will first want to go and visit it yourself so that you can evaluate how safe it is for your child.
When visiting a playground, here are some things you will want to keep in mind:
- What is the area surrounding the playground like? If it is near a busy street or on the edge of some dense woods, you will likely want to choose a different location. Ideally, a good playground will be in the middle of a large open area so that visibility is high and you can keep an eye on your child at all times.
- Are the structures in good working order? You will want to make sure that the playground equipment is not falling apart or made with unsafe materials. Additionally, it is important that structures are not placed too closely together, so that if a child falls from one structure, they will not collide with another one.
- What is the playground surface made of? You should never let your child play on a playground that is paved with cement or a similar hard and unforgiving material. Ideally, a playground should have something soft and cushioning like shredded rubber as its surface.
