What Should You Do After A Car Accident?

Suicide Doors

Many cars around the middle of the 20th century were equipped with doors that were hinged at the rear, or trailing, edge of the door. These doors were designed to make entering and exiting the vehicle much easier. Unfortunately, due to a number of safety problems, these doors became known as suicide doors.

The term “suicide door” came to be used when it became apparent that the doors were not quite as safe as other doors. If the door becomes unlatched, or is even partially unlatched, while the car is moving forward, the door is able to fall open quite easily. This is due mostly to the ability of air to sneak in to the space between the door and the rest of the car and then pull the door open, like a sail almost.

To prevent this problem, a number of car companies have implemented a variety of locks to prevent the doors from opening up. A Lincoln 4-door convertible in the 1960s required the battery to be in effect to open the rear doors. Other companies have developed a clam-shell design that prevents the rear door from opening unless the front door has been opened. This is common in four-door pick-up trucks.

In addition to problems with the rear doors flying open while moving forward, there are other problems with suicide doors. For example, when the car is parked, the door can and does hide an exiting or entering passenger from the view of passing cars. If the door is then hit, the door would be slammed shut onto the passenger.
