What Should You Do After A Car Accident?

Understanding the Severity of Spinal Cord Injury

There is a reason that people who are critical to an endeavor’s success are called the “backbone.” The spine is responsible for allowing the body to retain its upright stature, and the spinal cord contains the nerves that direct the flow of messages between the brain and the rest of the body. Bones called vertebrae surround the spinal cord and are designed to offer maximum protection from injury. This is with good reason, too.

Injuries to the spinal cord can be either complete or incomplete. Spinal cord injuries termed “complete” cause the total loss of sensation and voluntary control below the specific vertebral location on both sides of the body. “Incomplete” injuries are so termed because some degree of sensation or voluntary motor control is available at points below the injury on either side.

The nerves and vertebrae are divided into the following regions (from high to low) and within those regions are assigned a number, increasing with descent down the spine, for the specification of particular loci of nervous control:

  • Cervical Nerves
  • Thoracic Nerves
  • Lumbar Nerves
  • Sacral Nerves

To emphasize the delicate nature of these injuries, an injury that takes place high enough on the spine (above the C-4 vertebra) will not only be likely to render the victim quadriplegic, but it will also potentially require the assistance of a ventilator to breathe.

A few vertebrae down from that point (around T-1 and T-2), someone may have complete use of the hands and be able to breathe on their own. Neither injury should be taken lightly, but it serves to illustrate that when dealing with a spinal cord injury, the utmost care and caution must be taken to avoid aggravating the injury further.
