Verbal Abuse
There are many forms of abuse that an individual may be subjected to at any point. One of the main types of abuse is verbal abuse. Verbal abuse, or reviling, is an abusive behavior that uses language to abuse a person. This type of abuse is a form of profanity that may or may not include the use of expletives in its application. Oral abuse is the most common form of verbal abuse but written words can also be deemed abusive.
Verbal abuse is a type of behavior carried out against another that can impede or inhibit the emotional development of an individual. In addition, in the long run, the abuse can lead to a significant detriment to the victim’s self-esteem, emotional well-being, and even the individual’s physical state. This type of abuse has been known to be orchestrated by the abuser for a purpose of some level of control.
The abuser in any verbal abuse situation typically has a low regard for him or herself. This leads to the idea that nothing the abuser ever does is “good enough” to meet another’s expectations. As a result, the abuser attempts to bring the victim in the same or similar position through verbal abuse of the individual. Constantly demeaning the victim is one of the ways that an abuser may choose to lower the confidence and emotional state of the victim.
While it may start out as merely verbal, this area of abuse has a tendency to escalate in intensity over time. This type of abuse may also escalate to physical abuse as well.
