What Should You Do After A Car Accident?

Treating Burns: What to Avoid

Most minor burns can be treated at home without professional attention. However, it is important to follow the right steps, or a mild injury can become a more serious problem. One of our previous articles covered the basic steps to take in reaction to a burn. This article will look at common mistakes people make that you should avoid.

Remember: a burn that spans a joint, affects a sensitive area like the face, or has patches of white, dry skin needs immediate professional care. When in doubt, call a doctor.

When treating a minor burn at home, keep the following “don’ts” in mind:

  • Do not treat a burn with butter (a common folk remedy) or any kind of cream or oils. This will hold the heat in next to the burn, possibly delaying healing. Once the burn has healed, antibacterial creams that be used to prevent infection.
  • Do not pop blisters (a sign of second degree burns). This will expose damaged skin to the air, possibly leading to infection. Cover blisters with a sterile bandage and allow them to heal.
  • Do not put ice directly on a fresh burn. This can actually damage the skin. A burn should be cleaned with a cool, damp cloth before being bandaged.
  • Do not ignore any potential signs of infection. Pain, redness, and swelling in the injured area after it should have healed can be warning signs, as can a fever. Contact a doctor right away if you develop any of these symptoms.
