A native Southerner, Jacksonville personal injury lawyer Don Guthrie grew up in Florida’s panhandle. A former US Army Infantry Major, Don served with distinction as a Platoon leader and Executive Officer in the prestigious US Army Berlin Brigade during the peak of the Cold War, and as a Company Commander and Battalion Staff Officer with the elite 101st Airborne Division. After being honorably discharged, Don returned to his home state and earned his law degree from the University of Florida. He became a licensed attorney, and has accrued over a decade of experience handling personal injury cases.
Currently, Don practices personal injury law in Jacksonville and Northeast Florida, with a concentration in car and motorcycle accidents, premises liability, and wrongful death cases. He brings considerable legal experience to his current position combining: the significant courtroom skill he gained through working as an Assistant Public Defender in Duval County; the insider know-how he gained as an insurance defense attorney; and the invaluable expertise he acquired by working in a larger personal injury law firm. Additionally, Don has served as a volunteer mediator in the State Attorney’s Fourth Judicial Circuit Diversionary Program, designed to render speedy justice without involvement in the traditional court system. As a Florida personal injury attorney, he is affiliated with numerous professional legal associations and trial groups, including the Florida Bar Trial Lawyers Section, The Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers, and The Association of Trial Lawyers of America.
Don’s broad life experience is also a significant asset in many aspects of his legal practice. A licensed private pilot, he flew his first solo flight at the age of 17, giving him a unique and clear understanding of the complex field of aviation injury law. His current aviation memberships and associations include the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) and the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA). Don has also traveled extensively throughout Europe on motorcycles–an experience that provides him rare insight into motorcycle accidents and their victims.
Caring for the Community
As a very active member of the community, Don is involved with several different, local, charitable organizations and events. Don has participated in many fundraising efforts to include campaigns for the Florida Highway Patrol Chapter of the Florida Police Benevolent Association and local Youth Incentive Programs. Don is also a participant in the Florida Veteran’s Affairs Voluntary Service Program, and Florida’s chapters of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and Disabled American Veterans. Additionally, he is an attorney member of The Veterans Consortium Pro Bono Program, based out of Washington, D.C.–an organization that provides legal representation to veterans at the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims.
Don is a founding member of the Jacksonville National Cemetery Advisory Committee, an organization that was instrumental in the efforts to establish a National Veterans Cemetery for North Florida to serve our Veterans and their families’ needs well into the next century. He volunteers with the Community Hospice of Northeast Florida with emphasis on their outreach program designed to educate veterans on Hospice’s comprehensive program focused on end-of-life care needs that are unique to military veterans and their families. Don also serves as co-chairman of the Veterans History Project First Coast that works in concert with the United States Library of Congress to collect and archive the personal recollections of U.S. veterans (from WWII to the War on Terror) in order to honor their service and share their stories with current and future generations.
On a personal note, Don is an avid golfer and a student of military history with a particular interest in WWII.
