AstraZeneca, producers of the widely prescribed anti-psychotic Seroquel, have been named in three lawsuits filed by the states of Pennsylvania, Montana and Arkansas. The suits are being filed by state governments because about 80 percent of anti-psychotic prescriptions are paid for by state programs, due to the loss of productivity often created by serious mental illness.
Allegations being made against AstraZeneca include the use misleading advertising encouraging people to take Seroquel for reasons that have not been approved by the FDA (a practice known as off-label marketing), manipulating drug trials to cover the side effects of the drug, and paying doctors to promote the drug for off-label uses. The company is also facing more than 8,500 personal injury lawsuits from patients who have developed diabetes or other complications due to the drug.
