Earlier this month, a four-year old was tragically killed in a dog attack in Jacksonville, Florida.  The incident occurred on October 24th when a pit bull terrier attacked the child.  The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there were 368,245 emergency room visits for dog bites or attacks in 2001.

According to the dog's owners it has no previous history of aggression.  Both the Jacksonville Sheriff's Department and the Florida Department of Children and Families are investigating the attack.  DCF spokesman John Harrell stated, "Our investigation will reveal if the incident was abuse, neglect or an accident…It's a very tragic case and our sympathy goes out to everyone who knew the child".
