The U.S. Department of Transportation recently released a report on traffic fatalities from 2004 to 2008.  The report shows that the most common factors contributing to a fatal car accident are speed, route, traffic controls, traffic and weather.  Other causes included distracted driving, such as talking on the cell phone, texting, eating, etc., and drunk driving.

From 2004 to 2008, there were 187,796 traffic fatalities nationwide.  58 percent of fatal accidents from 2004 to 2008 were single-vehicle accidents while two-vehicle accidents accounted for 35 percent.  6 percent of fatalities occurred in multi-vehicle accidents.

In addition, 94 percent of fatal car accidents involved only one fatality.
