Industrial crane collapses, kills worker

Posted on January 25th, 2011 No Comments

This past Saturday, a portable crane being operated to dismantle an old shipping crane collapsed at JaxPort.  The accident occurred at around 12 in the afternoon at the Talleyrand Marine Terminal.

Anthony F. Roberts was operating the crane to move pieces of scrap from an old crane.  Police reports say that a piece of the old crane Roberts was moving fell and hit the cab of the portable crane he was operating.  Roberts, a contractor, was hired by a company to remove the crane from the port.  Police did not specify how Roberts was injured but say that he died at the scene of the accident.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials will be investigating this tragic construction accident.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims’ family and friends.
