What Should You Do After A Car Accident?

Research shows helmets reduce risk of spinal injury

Although some studies have tried to prove that wearing a motorcycle helmet could increase one’s chances of suffering a spinal injury in a motorcycle accident, new research proves that with current designs in motorcycle helmets, the risk of suffering a spinal injury in a motorcycle accident is significantly lower for an individual who wears a helmet.

Previous studies were fearful that motorcycle helmets could increase torque on a motorcyclist’s neck.  The new study, published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, says motorcyclists wearing a helmet are 22 percent less likely to suffer a cervical spine injury in an accident.  Researchers analyzed more than 40,000 motorcycle accidents occurring between 2002 and 2006 from the National Trauma Databank to achieve their findings.
