The Florida Highway Patrol suspects that a Jacksonville police officer was driving under the influence of alcohol when he was involved in an accident early this morning.

The accident occurred on Greenbriar Road at around 2 a.m. when the 39-year old uniformed police officer was returning home from work.  The officer’s vehicle was traveling westbound when it crossed over the center line of the road and collided head-on with a vehicle traveling eastbound.  The 18-year old driver whose vehicle was struck by the police officer’s suffered minor injuries in the accident.

Reports indicate that the officer’s breath smelled of alcohol and that investigators found beer spilled on the floorboard of his vehicle.  The officer refused to submit a blood sample.
