What is a tort?
Originally, civil law only applied when two people were bound by a contract. If a person was injured by someone who had never signed a contract with them, they had little if any recourse. Tort law was created to address this oversight. A tort is a kind of lawsuit filed against someone who deliberately injures another person or who deliberately acts in a reckless way that causes injury.
