Jacksonville Pool Drain Injury Lawyer
Drowning is a leading cause of death for children in the US. The lasting brain injuries that can be caused by a near-drowning accident are also cause for great concern. Unfortunately, there are many different variables that can cause swimming pool injuries, including faulty pool drains.
The federal government has attempted to address this problem with legislation requiring public pools to meet certain safety standards. This cannot entirely solve the problem, however. One issue is that these regulations do not apply to private residential pools, which can still pose a great danger. An even larger issue, however, is the simple fact that property owners do not always obey the law.

Federal Pool Drain Requirements
The recently updated federal regulations apply to all public use pools and spas. The term “public use” refers to any pool or spa that is open to the public, even if it is on private property. For example, a hotel’s swimming pool can be public use.
Any pool or spa open to the public must have adequate safety mechanisms related to the drain. Without them, the drain’s suction can become too great, trapping people under the water. To prevent this kind of accident, all pool drains must be adequately covered. Additionally, pools must include at least one safety feature, such as:
- Suction-limiting vent systems
- Automatic pump shutoff systems
- Drain disablement systems
