Jacksonville Seizure Attorney
Seizures are one of the most serious potential side effects of a traumatic brain injury. They occur when the normal electro-chemical currents in the brain are disrupted. Studies suggest that about 30% of people who suffer a traumatic brain injury will experience post-traumatic seizures.
Jacksonville brain injury attorney Don Guthrie understands the negative effects that even one seizure can have on a person’s life. To learn more about the legal options for head injury victims, contact our offices at 904-296-1088.
Symptoms of a Seizure
The type of seizure that is most commonly caused by a brain injury is called a generalized seizure. If a person has suffered from a head injury, or has no prior history of seizures, a generalized seizure is an emergency requiring immediate medical attention.
A generalized seizure generally has three distinct phases:
- Aura: A period of altered mental status. The patient may experience hallucinations, a strong sense of déjà-vu, strong but inappropriate emotions, or dizziness.
- Tonic phase: The patient will lose consciousness, and his or her muscles will suddenly contract. If he or she is standing, he or she will fall.
- Clonic phase: A period of violent convulsions, followed by a few minutes of unconsciousness. The patient may experience amnesia when he or she wakes up.
The Prognosis
It is currently impossible to predict which head injury patients will experience seizures, or when. A seizure may follow a head injury immediately or years later. Patients can experience one seizure in their lives, or suffer from a chronic seizure disorder.
Seizures can usually be adequately controlled with medication. However, these medications can be very costly and have unwanted side effects. There is also no guarantee that they will prevent all seizures.
